So you call yourself an expert in all things Star Wars? Let’s see how much you really know about the galaxy far, far away.
There are endless amounts of Star Wars trivia to go through, so we will only touch on some of the most interesting facts about George Lucas’ creation.
“I have a bad feeling about this.”
This line is repeated multiple times throughout both existing trilogies. Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) say it in A New Hope. Leia says it in Return of the Jedi when she meets Lando Calrissian (Billie Dee Williams). Will J.J. Abrams include the iconic line in Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
Did the two actors who play Darth Vader ever meet?
The answer is, no. James Earl Jones — who voices the Dark Side feared leader — never met David Prowse, even though both played the same character in different forms. Twenty-years later Prowse was still ticked that Lucas didn’t use his own voice.
Harrison Ford intercom scene
In order to make the scene, in which Stormtroopers questions what’s going on in the cell block, more credible, Harrison Ford didn’t rehearse his lines for this scene. It turned out very credible indeed.
Darth Vader TIE fighter spinning scene
George Lucas insisted A New Hope include Darth Vader’s TIE fighter spinning out of control into space. He was met with opposition from other crew members, who argued it left the film setup for a sequel, which in those days was not considered a cash making film.
Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill goofed around on set
Han and Luke had some good times while filming Star Wars, that much we know, thanks to Harrison Ford. What you were perhaps not aware of is that Ford and Hamill only misbehaved when Sir Alec Guiness was not around. When he was on set, they were very proper.
George Lucas was not communicative
The actors found Lucas to be very uncommunicative with his favorite instructions being “faster” and “more intense”. When he got sick during production and lost his voice for a time, some of the other crew members made him a board with those three words on it.
Star Wars Oscar nomination
Did you know that this is the only science fiction movie ever to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award? Additionally, A New Hope is the only film in both trilogies to receive a Best Picture nomination. As we know, the Academy doesn’t normally recognize the sci-fi genre.
The trash compactor scene
In the scene where Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewbacca are trapped in a foul smelling trash compactor, the smell was so awful that Chewie’s costume didn’t lose it for the duration of production. Also, Mark Hamill held his breath for so long that he broke a blood vessel in his face. The remaining shots are from the other side only.
Star Wars sounds
Darth Vader’s breathing sound was created by placing a small microphone in the mouthpiece of a scuba regulator and then recording the sound made by his breathing through the regulator. R2 D2’s noises were sound designer Ben Burtt making baby noises and then feeding them through a synthesizer.
Also, the sound of a TIE fighter is created by combining the squeal of a young elephant with the sound of a car driving by on a rainy highway, according to IMDB.
These are just some Star Wars trivia facts that you may not know about. However, one of the most important is that George Lucas was under so much pressure and was facing so many obstacles on a daily basis during production, that he made himself sick and ended up in the hospital with hypertension.
After all that hard work, he was so sure the movie would flop that he skipped the premiere and went to Hawaii on a much needed “vacation” with Steven Spielberg, there, they came up with the idea for Raiders of the Lost Ark, which would star Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones.
